Pevensey
Pevensey is a village and also civil parish in the Wealden district of East Sussex, England. The primary village lies 5 miles (8 km) north-east of Eastbourne, one mile (1.6 kilometres) inland from Pevensey Bay. The settlement of Pevensey Bay creates part of the parish. It was here that William the Conqueror made the touchdown in his invasion of England in 1066 after going across the English Channel from Normandy, France. In 1207 the town was given a royal charter by King John and was controlled by Pevensey Corporation. With the decrease in the community's relevance by the 19th century, the Corporation was eventually dissolved in 1886 as well as the community shed its district standing. The documents of the Corporation are kept in the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes, and also a volunteer body, the Pevensey Town Trust, was formed to handle the building which had formerly belonged to the Corporation, most notably the Old Court House. Pevensey is currently a town, with a parish council containing twelve elected councillors. Three councillors are elected to the Wealden District Council to represent Pevensey; the Member of Parliament is Hugh Merriman, who represents the Bexhill and also Battle Constituency, of which Pevensey is component. Pevensey is likewise part of the electoral ward called Pevensey and Westham. The population of this ward at the 2011 Census was 9,467.
