Extensions including garage conversions will typically require extra damp proofing to be installed as part of conversion, as the pre-existing garage routinely has a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not manufactured to comply with building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing will have to be added to walls and floors. Additionally, the roofing of the garage conversion will need water proofing. The damp proofing of the floor of the garage conversion will in most cases be performed by employing a damp proof membrane. This membrane can come in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be put down either on top of the existing concrete floor, underneath the new floor, or as part of both, depending on whether the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In a few garages, the walls have been damp proofed, but this may have to be improved as part of the conversion in order to adhere to current building regulations. The walls will need to be damp proofed to be able to safeguard the brickwork from rotting slowly as moisture sets in. This is carried out by either applying damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls that are already present in the garage. Damp proofing is an integral part of the building regulations that the garage conversion should comply with, therefore is it important to ensure that your garage conversion employs appropriate damp proofing methods.
The average cost of Damp proofing is £1500. Costs vary based upon the materials and the organisation selected. The upper price range can be as high as £1725. The material costs are in general about £375

Kilmacolm is a town and civil parish in the Inverclyde council area, and the historical county of Renfrewshire in the west main Lowlands of Scotland. It lies on the northern slope of the Gryffe Valley, 7 1/2 miles (12.1 km) south-east of Greenock and also around 15 miles (24 km) west of the city of Glasgow. The town has a population of around 4,000 and becomes part of a broader civil parish which covers a huge rural hinterland of 15,000 hectares (150 km2; 58 sq mi) having within it the smaller sized negotiation of Quarrier's Village, originally established as a 19th-century household orphans' residence. The area bordering the village was cleared up in prehistoric times and also emerged as part of a feudal culture with the church divided between different estates for much of its background. The town itself stayed small, supplying services to neighboring ranch areas and acting as a religious hub for the parish. The name of the village stems from the Scottish Gaelic Cill MoCholuim, showing the dedication of its church to St Columba. The parish church was pointed out in a papal bull of 1225 revealing its subservience to Paisley Abbey, as well as it remains on the website of an old religious community dating to the 5th or sixth centuries. Again in the 13th century, Duchal Castle was constructed in the parish as well as is significant for being besieged by King James IV of Scotland in 1489, complying with the resident Lyle household's assistance of an insurrection against him. Feuding between the noble family members of Kilmacolm was typical between Ages, as well as in the 16th and 17th centuries, the parish again involved the focus of the Crown for supplying assistance to banned spiritual Covenanters. The character of the town changed significantly in the Victorian age, with the arrival of the train in Kilmacolm in 1869. Many of Kilmacolm's contemporary structures were constructed between this date as well as the episode of World war. The introduction of such transport web links enabled the town to broaden as an affluent dorm room town serving the nearby metropolitan centres of Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock. The economy of the town showed this population change, moving away from its traditional dependence on farming to offering tertiary industry solutions to residents and also visitors.

Damp is a serious problem, particularly if you live in an old property, because it can lead to structural damage. This will cost you big money and could be very dangerous, to yourself and the property. Take damp seriously and get it inspected and resolved as soon as you discover it!
Signs of rising damp tend to be close to the ground, usually no higher than a metre. It usually works its way up walls in horizontal lines. Penetrating damp usually develops in patches and can often be much higher up. For more advice, speak to a damp proofing professional.
You should make sure that all signs of damp have gone before you redecorate your walls. If you want to paint your walls with a water-permeable emulsion paint, you can usually do this after 1 or 2 months. For other types of decoration you should wait longer.
There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.
