Extensions such as garage conversions will usually require supplementary damp proofing to be added as part of conversion, as the pre-existing garage normally has a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not built to comply with building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing will need to be put into walls and floors. Moreover, the roof of the garage conversion will need water proofing. The damp proofing for the floor of the garage conversion will usually be achieved by using a damp proof membrane. This membrane can come in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be placed down either on top of the pre-existing concrete floor, underneath the new floor, or as part of both, depending on if the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In a few garages, the walls will have already been damp proofed, but this might need to be updated as part of the conversion to be able to comply with current building regulations. The walls will need to be damp proofed to be able to protect the brickwork from rotting gradually as moisture sets in. This is accomplished by either applying damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls that are already present in the garage. Damp proofing is an important part of the building regulations that the garage conversion should comply with, therefore is it vital to make sure that your garage conversion incorporates appropriate damp proofing methods.
The average cost of Damp proofing is £1500. Costs vary based upon the materials and the organisation selected. The upper price range can be as high as £1725. The material costs are in general about £375

Johnstone is a town in the council area and county of Renfrewshire in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. It lies 3 miles west of Paisley, 12 miles west of the centre of the city of Glasgow and 12 miles north east of Kilwinning. Constituting a section of the biggest conurbation in Scotland, Johnstone sits on the western boundary of the Greater Glasgow Urban Area. Johnstone was a planned community, which formed around the house of Easter Cochrane, now called Johnstone Castle. Development started in 1782 when the Laird George Houston validated designs for a variety of residential seats forming the town centre. The building of 2 identical civic squares, Houstoun Square and Ludovic Square, and the town gained its parish church by 1794. Coal mining started to bring wealth to Johnstone in the 19th century, with the population increasing to 5600 in 1831. Such a growth in population meant the boost in slum conditions until the development of an area of the town to contain a significant number of purpose-built housing estates, occurring in the 1930s. Much of Johnstone's history preceding industrialisation has vanished, with Johnstone Castle ending up being derelict after the last Laird died in 1931. The town's population of 15687 is well-connected to the rest of Scotland because of its proximity to efficient transportation links. A dual carriageway joins Johnstone to the M8 motorway for transport links to central Scotland, and the town includes 2 railway stations with regular trains to Glasgow Central, Paisley and the Ayrshie Coast. Those wanting to go further afar are 3.5 miles away from Glasgow International Airport and 40 minutes away by train from Prestwick International Airport. For all your home upgrades, make sure to make use of reliable professionals in Johnstone to make certain of quality.

Signs of rising damp tend to be close to the ground, usually no higher than a metre. It usually works its way up walls in horizontal lines. Penetrating damp usually develops in patches and can often be much higher up. For more advice, speak to a damp proofing professional.
Damp is a serious problem, particularly if you live in an old property, because it can lead to structural damage. This will cost you big money and could be very dangerous, to yourself and the property. Take damp seriously and get it inspected and resolved as soon as you discover it!
You should make sure that all signs of damp have gone before you redecorate your walls. If you want to paint your walls with a water-permeable emulsion paint, you can usually do this after 1 or 2 months. For other types of decoration you should wait longer.
There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.
