Southwark
The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames towards the City of London. It was formed in 1965 when three smaller sized council locations amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This incorporated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, as well as the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It is governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
It borders the City of London and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to the north, with the River Thames forming the boundary, the London Borough of Lambeth towards the west along with the London Borough of Lewisham to the east. To the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Southwark includes a wide selection of housing, which includes council housing, such as the post-Blitz Aylesbury Estate plus the Heygate Estate to provide residences to low-income residents. About 31 percent of householders are owner-occupiers.
The borough is home to a variety of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich hosts the Dulwich Picture Gallery as well as the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
