The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was established in 1965 when three smaller sized council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This included the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It's governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
The borough covers an overall area of roughly 11.14 square miles. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Southwark has a wide selection of housing, which includes council housing, like the post-Blitz Aylesbury Estate and also the Heygate Estate to provide homes to low-income residents. About 31 percent of householders are owner-occupiers.
The borough is residence to a variety of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery along with the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
