Buxton
Buxton is a spa town in Derbyshire. Because it is on the border of the county boundary, with Cheshire to the west and Staffordshire to the south, Buxton is frequently described as 'The Gateway to the Peak District National Park'. Historically a municipal borough, Buxton joined other locations in 1974 to create the local government district and borough of High Peak inside the county of Derbyshire. At 300 metres above sea level, Buxton is believed to be England's highest market town. Such height means that the town is generally cooler than nearby places, with the daytime temperature roughly 2 degrees Celsius lower than the temperature in Manchester. Found on the River Wye and overlooked by Axe Edge Moor, Buxton is traditionally a spa town due to the geothermal spring that rises at a constant temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. The water from the spring flows to St. Ann's Well by way of a pipe system which is positioned opposite the Crescent in close proximity to the centre of Buxton. Buxton reached much popularity after the spa was recommended by Erasmus Darwin to Josiah Wedgwood in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The water from the geothermal spring is also bottled and sold on an international scale by Buxton Mineral Water Company. As per the 2011 Census, the permanent resident population of the town is approximately 22,115. The town has seen continued expansion since the coming of the railway in 1863. There is also a fairly prominent student population, with the Devonshire Campus of the University of Derby being in 1 of Buxton's historic buildings.
