Bingley
Bingley is a market town within the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford situated in West Yorkshire, England. The town sits on the River Aire as well as the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is situated in Airedale on the south of Ilkley Moor. The population has recently witnessed a decline, having a population of about 19,884 in 2001 and reducing to 18,294 as recorded in the 2011 Census. The definition of the town's name is interpreted as 'Bing's Clearing' and has Saxon origins. The town's first settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was made in 1986 with the intention of changing the ford. Much of the older history of the town remains present within the town, for example the Bingley Grammar School, founded in the 16th century, which is thought to be one of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley contains an abundance of local shops, a street market, banks and the 'Little Theatre'. There are also effective transportation links in the town, with a railway station in the town centre as well as Leeds Bradford Airport being in close proximity to the town. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal navigate the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with visitors frequently watching barges navigating the locks. Because of its mostly unspoilt habitat, walking and cycling in the town proves popular, and golfers can play at the Bingley St. Ives Golf Club. An annual music festival, Bingley Music Live, is hosted from Myrtle Park, boasting a selection of good quality music attracting a diverse audience.
