Extensions such as garage conversions will usually require extra damp proofing to be installed during the conversion, as the existing garage will typically have a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not manufactured to conform to building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing will need to be added to walls and floors. Moreover, the roof of the garage conversion will need water proofing. The damp proofing of the floor of the garage conversion will often be achieved by by using a damp proof membrane. This membrane will come in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be put down either on top of the pre-existing concrete floor, below the new floor, or as part of both, depending on whether the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In some garages, the walls have been damp proofed, but this may need to be updated as part of the conversion in order to comply with current building regulations. The walls will need to be damp proofed to be able to protect the brickwork from rotting slowly as moisture sets in. This can be done by either implementing damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls that are already in the garage. Damp proofing is a part of the building regulations that the garage conversion will need to comply with, therefore is it necessary to ensure that your garage conversion makes use of suitable damp proofing methods.
The average cost of Damp proofing is £1500. Costs vary based upon the materials and the organisation selected. The upper price range can be as high as £1725. The material costs are in general about £375

Ellon is a town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is approximately 16 miles (26 kilometres) north of Aberdeen, lying on the River Ythan, which has one of the couple of undeveloped river estuaries on the eastern coast of Scotland. It is in the ancient region of Formartine. Its name is thought to come from the Gaelic word Eilean, an island, on account of the presence of an island in the River Ythan, which supplied a convenient fording point. In accordance with population estimations from 2006, the town has a permanent resident population of around 9860 people. Ellon has actually taken advantage of the North Sea oil demand, and is among the main dormitory towns for Aberdeen. Regular and frequent bus services link Ellon with Aberdeen, Inverurie, Peterhead, Fraserburgh and surrounding towns and towns, serving both the town centre and the large Park and Ride facility at the eastern edge of the town. Ellon becomes part of the proposed Energetica corridor of development. The population is expanding as young families seek to get away from Aberdeen and move to nearby towns like Ellon, Inverurie and Banchory. During 2006, Ellon placed as the town with the 4th most quickly increasing average house prices in Scotland. Places of interest within the town include the ruins of Ellon Castle, surrounded by walls referred to as the Deer Dyke, and the Auld Brig, a category A listed bridge over the Ythan, constructed in 1793 and still in use as a pedestrian bridge. The Riverside Park offers pathways beside the Ythan, from which herons, salmon, trout and otters may be observed. The Meadows sports centre has several sporting facilities and clubs, including football and rugby pitches, an astroturf pitch for hockey, a fitness center, and a multi-use sports hall. For all your home improvements, be sure to find trusted experts in Ellon to make certain of quality.

You should make sure that all signs of damp have gone before you redecorate your walls. If you want to paint your walls with a water-permeable emulsion paint, you can usually do this after 1 or 2 months. For other types of decoration you should wait longer.
Signs of rising damp tend to be close to the ground, usually no higher than a metre. It usually works its way up walls in horizontal lines. Penetrating damp usually develops in patches and can often be much higher up. For more advice, speak to a damp proofing professional.
There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.
Damp is a serious problem, particularly if you live in an old property, because it can lead to structural damage. This will cost you big money and could be very dangerous, to yourself and the property. Take damp seriously and get it inspected and resolved as soon as you discover it!
