Calne
Calne is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, southwestern England, at the north western edge of the North Wessex Downs hill range. A marked Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Calne is positioned on a little river, the Marden, that rises 2 miles (3 km) away in the Wessex Downs, and it is the only town on that river. During the time of the 2011 Census, Calne boasted a population of around 17,274 inhabitants. Since the late 1990s, Calne expanded dramatically in contrast to most other towns in the South West region. The Lansdowne Park housing development, finished at the end of 2008, has noticeably enhanced the physical scale of the town, making a totally new north-western suburban area. This features a new primary school, a medical centre and a compact shopping area including a mixture of stores. This type of redevelopment has drawn in professional workers from traditionally more well off areas for example, Bath, Bristol, Marlborough and as far afield as the 'silicon valley' towns of central Berkshire. Well known buildings in the town include St Mary's Church, a variety of homes on The Green, and the town hall. Of special note is Calne Library, opened by the Queen in 2001, which has won awards for its revolutionary style. Ever since the demolition of the Harris pork factory and the conclusion of the initial phase of redevelopment regeneration in 2001, Calne has seen Cotswold stone, much like local limestone, being used alongside smart red brickwork, previously saved for fine historic buildings.
