The town was established after the sale of land in 1881 to build the Bexleyheath loop line in between Lewisham and Dartford. Its name stems from the name of the railway station, which was named after Colonel Barne, who owned a nearby home and was vice-chairman of the railway company. Today, the railway station runs trains between London Charing Cross, London Victoria or London Cannon Street, by way of Lewisham and Eltham to the west and Dartford railway station to the east. There are 12 trains an hour during the week; on Sundays, there are four trains per hour. The railway station was openedto stimulate the building of houses. The Barnehurst Estate was built in 1926 which housed lots of people.
Along with the railway station, Barnehurst is served by 5 buses, 1 of which goes to the popular Bluewater Shopping Centre. There are few shopping or leisure opportunities in the town, so individuals frequently go to surrounding areas utilising public transport links or the primary roads.
