Wingate
Wingate is a town in County Durham, England. Wingate is a previous pit village with a mixture of 19th-century, post-war, and also much more recent housing developments. It was initially occupied by around 30 farmers before 1839 when coal was discovered. It is located in the East of County Durham, three miles southern west of Peterlee, and 7 miles north west of Hartlepool. Just like many towns in the area, it proliferated with the advancement of coal-mining in the area. The name Wingate is stated to stem from the Anglo-Saxon words windig (gusty) and also geat (road) meaning gusty road. Like all County Durham towns, citizens are known to speak the pitmatic dialect although new housing developments has seen a sharp rise in the village's population. A selecting ward in the very same name exists. This ward extends north east to Peterlee as well as has an overall population, taken at the 2011 census, of 10,302.
