Boldon Colliery
The Boldons are a group of 3 small towns in the north eastern of England - East Boldon, West Boldon and Boldon Colliery - north of Sunderland, east of Newcastle and also southern of South Shields and also Jarrow. They have a population of 13,271. Lying within the historical limits of County Durham, the towns are first recorded in print in 1170. Their names advanced from the words "Bold" or "Botl", indicating a structure, and "dun", suggesting a hillside. In 1866, job started sinking a pit that began generating coal in 1869, and also was then called Boldon New Winning. The town that developed close by in the 1870s became known as Boldon Colliery.
