Loft conversion companies in Kilwinning

Are you thinking of a loft space conversion in order to open space in your house and steer clear of the requirement to move? Then use our totally free and simple service to compare quotations to get the top price for the work you want completed.

Loft conversions are proving to become more popular then ever in the UK. In most houses the loft space accounts for unused space which could be put to better use. Converting can change the space into a bedroom, bathroom, playroom or perhaps ensuite bedroom.

In fact there's plenty of potential to converting your loft, such as extra value for your house which may be as much as 20%. Attic conversions are also suggested over a home extension as the infrastructure has already been in place. Additionally, you won't be removing any garden space.

If a loft conversion would benefit the house and you're interested in more room, do a comparison of prices from reliable companies within Kilwinning and get the best deal for the work you want completed.

Kilwinning

Kilwinning is a town in North Ayrshire, Scotland. Set on the River Garnock, it is 21 miles north or Irvine and 21 miles south of Glasgow, with its neighbouring towns being the coastal towns of Stevenston to the west and Irvine to the south. It is called 'The Crossroads of Ayreshire'. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town has a population of 16109, growing slightly from the 15908 residents reported in the 2001 Census. Much of the growth occurring in Kilwinning started in the 1960s. Following the Glasgow Overflow relocation programme, new estates were set up quickly on surrounding farm land in order to satisfy the projected rise in population. The historical town centre continues to be pedestrian-friendly, and they are surrounded by the housing estates of Corsehill, The Blacklands, Woodwynd, Pennyburn, Whitehirst Park, and Woodside. Also, Kilwinning's Main Street has more just recently been refurbished as a project performed by the Irvine Bay Regeneration Company. Such regeneration led directly to a wide range of new businesses setting up shops in the town centre. The service and retail sectors are increasingly growing in value in the town, as the town's classic association with coal mining, quarrying, iron-founding and textile manufacture having gone into decrease. Kilwinning is known for being home to the ruins of Eglinton Castle. Erected in between 1797 and 1802, the Gothic castellated design made it a structure of much grandeur. The Castle is remembered predominantly as the site of the Eglinton Tournament of 1839, which served to drain the Eglinton family fortune. For all of your house upgrades, make sure to make use of trustworthy professionals in Kilwinning to make certain of quality.

FAQs

how disruptive is a loft conversion?

Asides the questions relating to planning permission of a loft conversion as well as the total cost of completing a loft conversion project, this is perhaps the most common question on the loft conversion subject matter. Before making an investment decision, many homeowners will want to know just how disruptive a loft conversion is. Well, we’ve all heard the several horror stories when loft conversion builder with dirty boots tramples all over the fresh and just-acquired shag pile or the noise of the construction loud enough to annoy neighbours from four blocks away or an obvious shortage of teabags, sugar and lots more. Good news is, the disruption of loft conversion is not as bad as people make out. Let’s have a look at how it works!

Just like all other major building projects, a loft conversion is disruptive to your property. However, no two loft conversions are the same, therefore some are certain to be more drastic and invasive than others. In the long run, the project is worth the stress and inconveniences caused and in most cases, it’s usually a very good investment.

Normally, an average loft conversion is expected to last for about 9 to 12 weeks (depending on the complexity of the loft conversion project some might take longer). Some of the factors that affects the duration of a project includes the type of the loft, the design of the loft as well as the style of the property.

Generally, a loft conversion is a lot less disruptive than say completely moving a home. It all has to do with how you’re able to deal with it as a person. And besides, the effect it’s going to have to a large extent depends on the company you hire. A good company will always look to ensure to keep disruptions to a minimal when carrying out the loft conversion project.

how much is a dormer loft conversion?

Are you considering a dormer loft conversion for your home? If yes, then you’d probably want to know how much it costs. Unfortunately, due to the several variables and influencing factors, a precise answer can not be provided for all dormer loft conversions. In this article we’ll give you a vague idea of the general cost so you can set a more realistic budget and start planning.

There are three main types of loft conversion which includes the Velux, Dormer, and Mansard. Out of the three types, the dormer happens to be the most common type and possesses a small flat roofed extension with a window. The dormer loft conversion will usually cost within the range of £25,000 to £30,000.

The price for a smaller dormer loft conversion, mid range dormer loft conversion and large scale dormer loft conversion will be at £2,000 to £7,000, £10,000 to £30,000 and £40,000 to £60,000 respectively. However, you should take note that the prices given are all based on varying influencing factors such as the type of installation that is selected, the type of the rood, en suite conversion as well as other customization. Changes in price can be as a result of the materials required and the extra time per labour that’s needed to complete this home improvement project by the tradesmen employed.

Furthermore, a dormer loft conversion average cost will also depend on the type of dormer you opt for. Here is a list of the most common applications:

✓ Blind dormer loft conversion - £3,200 to £4,400

✓ Recessed dormer - £1,300 to £1,850

✓ Barrel roof dormer - £3,000 to £4,600

✓ Gable dormer - £5,500 to £7,500

✓ Hipped roof dormer - £5,600 to £6,660

✓ Pedimented dormer - £12,700 to £23,100

✓ Flat roof dormer loft conversion - £13,800 to £21,600

Will I need planning permission to convert my loft?

Planning permission is not normally needed for a loft conversion as they are covered by permitted development rights. A conversion company will tell you if you do and help you with this. For more information, see our article about planning permission.

do you need planning permission for a loft conversion?

Typically, loft conversions do not require planning permission except in certain situations. They’re usually covered under what’s known as Permitted Development. Certain building works like loft conversion, rear extension and conservatories are granted planning permission by local authorities. Permitted Development, however, gives you a free range to improve your home without having any issues from the councils or regulations. Before your planned loft conversion can be covered under Permitted Development, there are some certain criteria that must be met. This criteria includes the following:

✓ The extension must not go beyond the existing slope of the roof at the front of the house.

✓ The loft space converted must not go beyond 40 cubic metres in a terraced house.

✓ The roof’s height must not be increased by the extension.

✓ The loft space converted must not reach beyond 50 cubic metres in a detached or semi detached house.

✓ The plan for the extension mustn’t involve structures like balconies, verandas or anything other structures of this nature.

✓ The roof extension should be positioned as far back as possible or at least 20cm from the existing eaves.

✓ The side that faces the window openings should be at least 1.7m beyond the floor and the windows should also be obscured.

✓ The roof extension must not overhang the existing roof or wall of the house.

✓ The materials that are to be used must be similar or the same to the materials that has already been used on the house’s exterior.

However, you should bear in mind that there are some properties that are exempt from Permitted Development. Examples of these type of properties include conservation areas, Areas Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage sites. Permitted Development does not also provide coverage for listed buildings.
