Damp Proofing in Greenwich

Extensions including garage conversions will usually require additional damp proofing to be installed during the conversion, as the pre-existing garage normally has a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not built to comply with building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing will need to be put into walls and floors. Furthermore, the roofing of the garage conversion will require water proofing. The damp proofing for the floor of the garage conversion will often be achieved by employing a damp proof membrane. This membrane can come in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be placed down either on top of the existing concrete floor, below the new floor, or as part of both, depending on if the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In some garages, the walls have been damp proofed, but this might need to be improved as part of the conversion to be able to meet current building regulations. The walls will need to be damp proofed in order to protect the brickwork from rotting slowly as moisture sets in. This is performed by either utilising damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls already present in the garage. Damp proofing is an integral part of the building regulations that the garage conversion will need to comply with, and so is it important to ensure that your garage conversion employs appropriate damp proofing methods.

Greenwich

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is a London borough in south-east London, England. Taking its name from the historic town of Greenwich, the London Borough of Greenwich was formed in 1965 by the amalgamation of the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich with a part of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich to the east. The local council is Greenwich London Borough Council which meets in Woolwich Town Hall. The council's offices are also primarily based in Woolwich, the primary urban centre inside the borough. It covers a total area of 18.28 square miles.

According to population estimates from the middle of 2014, the borough has a permanent population of about 268678 inhabiants. Greenwich is most famously called the traditional place of the Prime Meridian, on which all Coordinated Universal Time is based.

Greenwich was among six host boroughs for the 2012 London Olympics and events were held at the Royal Artillery Barracks for shooting, Greenwich Park for equestrianism, as well as the O2, the former Millennium Dome, for gymnastics and basketball. It is also the home borough of professional football club Charlton Athletic. To mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, Greenwich became a Royal Borough on 3rd February 2012. This is partly a consequence of its historic links with the Royal Family, and to its UNESCO World Heritage Site status as residence of the Prime Meridian.

FAQs

How can I tell if my property has damp?

There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.

How quickly can I redecorate my walls after damp proofing has been installed?

You should make sure that all signs of damp have gone before you redecorate your walls. If you want to paint your walls with a water-permeable emulsion paint, you can usually do this after 1 or 2 months. For other types of decoration you should wait longer.

How can I tell what type of damp I’ve got?

Signs of rising damp tend to be close to the ground, usually no higher than a metre. It usually works its way up walls in horizontal lines. Penetrating damp usually develops in patches and can often be much higher up. For more advice, speak to a damp proofing professional.

Why is it important to fix a damp problem?

Damp is a serious problem, particularly if you live in an old property, because it can lead to structural damage. This will cost you big money and could be very dangerous, to yourself and the property. Take damp seriously and get it inspected and resolved as soon as you discover it!
