Damp Proofing in Ashbourne

Extensions including garage conversions will usually require additional damp proofing to be added as part of conversion, as the pre-existing garage normally has a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not designed to conform to building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing will have to be added to walls and floors. In addition, the roof of the garage conversion will need water proofing. The damp proofing for the floor of the garage conversion will most likely be achieved by utilising a damp proof membrane. This membrane is available in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be put down either on top of the existing concrete floor, below the new floor, or as part of both, depending on whether the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In some garages, the walls will have already been damp proofed, but this may have to be improved as part of the conversion in order to comply with current building regulations. The walls will need to be damp proofed in order to safeguard the brickwork from rotting slowly as moisture sets in. This can be accomplished by either applying damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls that are already in the garage. Damp proofing is an integral part of the building regulations that the garage conversion should adhere to, therefore is it vital to ensure that your garage conversion employs suitable damp proofing methods.

Ashbourne

Ashbourne is a market town within the Derbyshire Dales in England. As a result of its proximity to the southern edge of the Peak District and being the closest town to the well-liked area of Dovedale, the town is referred to as both the 'Gateway to Dovedale' and the 'Gateway to the Peak District'. Due to this tourism has constantly been vital to the town's economy. Based on the 2011 Census, the town has a resident population of around 8377 inhabitants. It includes several historical buildings and lots of independent shops and is popular for its historic yearly Shrovetide football match. The cobbled marketplace hosts a traditional outside market every Thursday and Saturday throughout the year, complementing the large array of individual shops within the town. Despite the fact that its market heritage is important, Ashbourne's market was under threat of closure from Derbyshire County Council in November 2012. Residents of Ashbourne have opposed any such moves by the council and created an online petition. Ashbourne became the 97th Fairtrade Town in March 2005 following many local businesses, cafes, shops and community organisations began supporting Fairtrade. Ashbourne offers a remarkable quantity of public houses for a very little town centre. At present, you can find 10 pubs open, along with 2 social clubs. The popular and rare 'gallows' sign across St John's Street is still central meeting point within the town. Local historians have noted that almost 1 in 4 buildings within the town have at one time or another been an alehouse, pub or inn or were redeveloped on the site of such an establishment. For all of your house improvement jobs, be sure that you use vetted professionals in Ashbourne to make sure that you get the top quality service.

FAQs

How quickly can I redecorate my walls after damp proofing has been installed?

You should make sure that all signs of damp have gone before you redecorate your walls. If you want to paint your walls with a water-permeable emulsion paint, you can usually do this after 1 or 2 months. For other types of decoration you should wait longer.

How can I tell if my property has damp?

There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.

How can I tell what type of damp I’ve got?

Signs of rising damp tend to be close to the ground, usually no higher than a metre. It usually works its way up walls in horizontal lines. Penetrating damp usually develops in patches and can often be much higher up. For more advice, speak to a damp proofing professional.

Why is it important to fix a damp problem?

Damp is a serious problem, particularly if you live in an old property, because it can lead to structural damage. This will cost you big money and could be very dangerous, to yourself and the property. Take damp seriously and get it inspected and resolved as soon as you discover it!
