The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was formed in 1965 when 3 smaller sized council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This incorporated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, along with the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It's controlled by Southwark London Borough Council.
The borough covers a total area of roughly 11.14 square miles. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. As outlined by population estimates created during 2014, Southwark has a permanent population of about 302538 individuals.
The borough is home to several cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich hosts the Dulwich Picture Gallery along with the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
