Southwark
The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames towards the City of London. It was formed in 1965 when 3 smaller sized council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This included the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and also the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. All districts of the area are inside the London postal district.
It borders the City of London and also the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to the north, with the River Thames forming the boundary, the London Borough of Lambeth towards the west and the London Borough of Lewisham towards the east. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. According to population estimates created during 2014, Southwark includes a permanent population of around 302538 inhabitants.
The borough is home to a number of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich hosts the Dulwich Picture Gallery plus the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
