Southwark
The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames towards the City of London. It was established in 1965 when 3 smaller council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This integrated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. All districts of the area are within the London postal district.
The borough covers a total area of around 11.14 square miles. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Based on population estimates made in the middle of 2014, Southwark has a permanent population of around 302538 inhabitants.
The borough is residence to several cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery as well as the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
