Welshpool is a community as well as area in Wales, traditionally in the region of Montgomeryshire, yet presently administered as part of the unitary authority of Powys. The community is positioned 4 miles (6.4 kilometres) from the Wales-- England boundary and low-lying on the River Severn; its Welsh language name Y Trallwng indicates "the marshy or sinking land". Welshpool is the fourth largest town in Powys. In English it was originally called Pool but its name was transformed to Welshpool in 1835 to differentiate it from the English community of Poole. It has a population of 6,664 (United Kingdom Census 2011), contains much Georgian style and also is just north of Powis Castle. The regional economic situation is largely based upon agriculture as well as local industry. The Smithfield Livestock Market is the largest one-day sheep market in Europe, whilst the community's industrial estates are residence to various different sorts of little market. Because of the town's little size and also population the destination of high street shops is limited, indicating many of the locals are required to shop in neighbouring communities like Newtown and also Shrewsbury.
