Alexandria
Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is positioned on the River Leven, four miles (six kilometres) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It's the biggest town inside the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed as a result of the textile industry. In 1715, the very first bleachfields in the area were created at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the United States grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Quickly, textile work in the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it too. The town's conventional industries, most importantly cotton manufacturing, bleaching and printing, have been phased out. The town was redeveloped during the 1970s with a new town centre layout and traffic system. Nearby landmarks include Christie Park as well as the fountain in the town centre. Alexandria sits on the former A82 main road between Glasgow and Loch Lomond.
