Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and town situated 3 miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies in the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided amongst the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided in between two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a small stream referred to as Leadmill Gill, is inside the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Every parish has its own parish council. It's the biggest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of about 13000 and measuring over 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to be a temporary camp to accommodate two comprehensive divisions with about 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is anticipated to grow to over 25000 by 2020, making it the largest population centre inside the local area. Lacking a true town centre, the Garrison gained its initial big supermarket in 2000, together with a retail park referred to as 'Richmondshire Walk', which also contains a McDonalds, a Poundstretcher and a Peacocks, amongst others. 'Catterick Leisure Centre' is a purpose built complex opposite the retail park, opened in July 2009, and it offers a broad spectrum of leisure and fitness facilities like a swimming pool, plus a fitness centre, and also an adjoining public library.
