Guisborough is a market town and civil parish in the English county of North Yorkshire. It is within a unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland, and in the Trees Valley region of the North East of England. Chiefly for ritualistic reasons, it remains in the ritualistic county of North Yorkshire. Held every Thursday and Saturday, along with on Tuesdays with the appearance of a few stalls, Guisborough market has had a remarkable place in the history of the town. Primarily selling primarily cattle and livestock, the market steadily evolved into a more basic market for such products as vegetables and fruit, clothes and flower stalls. It is run from the morning to late afternoon on the cobbles that line Westgate, the primary shopping street. As a result of its location near the ironstone mines of the North York Moors, the town also had a share in the success of the Industrial Revolution. According to the 2011 Census, the permanent population of the town is around 17777. Serious property development happened through the 1960s and 1970s with the growth of the chemical sector at Wilton and the steel industry at Redcar. Without any sizeable companies in the town, the town has become a commuter town for Middlesbrough, with various inhabitants working in the chemical plants spread around Teeside. Guisborough has a King George's Field in memory of King George V, and the town's football team, Guisborough Town F.C., plays on the King George V Ground. There is also a playing field containing a backyard and a skate park, and a pool from has been located in the park ever since 1968.
