Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, Region Durham, England. It is named after the castle around which it was built. It is the major settlement in the Teesdale area, and also is a popular vacationer destination. The Bowes Museum has the most effective collection of European penalty and also ornamental arts in the North of England, housed in a magnificent 19th-century French-style estate. Its most popular exhibition is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton, though art includes job by Goya as well as El Greco. Barnard Castle rests on the north bank of the River Tees, contrary Startforth as well as 21 miles (34 kilometres) south-west of the county town of Durham. Neighboring communities include Bishop Auckland to the north-east, Darlington to the eastern and Richmond in North Yorkshire to the south-east. Barnard Castle's biggest single employer is GlaxoSmithKline which has a manufacturing facility on the borders of town. Barnard Castle is for all functions (historic, ritualistic and management) situated in Region Durham. The county boundary with the North Riding of Yorkshire was readjusted in 1967: that part of the community of Barnard Castle historically in Yorkshire was contributed to County Durham. Barnard Castle was the management centre of the former Teesdale area of County Durham up until its abolition on 1 April 2009. The town is now carried out by Durham County Council Unitary Authority, as major authority and by Barnard Castle Town Council, as a parish. The Town Council chooses a ceremonial Town Mayor each year. It belongs to the Bishop Auckland legislative constituency, which since 2017 is stood for in parliament by Helen Goodman of Labour, though with a little bulk over the Conservatives. It is in the North East England area, which works as a constituency for the European Parliament. In between 1894 and 1967 the town was administratively part of Barnard Castle Urban District.
