Wingate
Wingate is a town in County Durham, England. Wingate is a former pit town with a combination of 19th-century, post-war, and extra current housing developments. It was initially populated by around 30 farmers prior to 1839 when coal was found. It is located in the East of County Durham, three miles south west of Peterlee, as well as seven miles north west of Hartlepool. Similar to most villages in the area, it proliferated with the development of coal-mining in the area. The name Wingate is claimed to derive from the Anglo-Saxon words windig (gusty) and geat (road) meaning gusty road. Like all County Durham villages, locals are understood to speak the pitmatic language although new housing developments has seen a sharp rise in the village's population. A selecting ward in the same name exists. This ward extends north east to Peterlee as well as has a complete population, taken at the 2011 census, of 10,302.
