Catterick Garrison
Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and town positioned 3 miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies inside the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided amongst the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided between two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a little stream generally known as Leadmill Gill, is inside the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Every parish has its personal parish council. It is the largest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of around 13000 and measuring over 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to become a short-term camp to accommodate two comprehensive divisions with about 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is expected to grow to over 25000 by 2020, making it the biggest population centre within the local area.
