Annan
Annan is a community and former royal burgh in Dumfries and also Galloway, south-west Scotland. Historically part of Dumfriesshire, its public buildings consist of Annan Academy, of which the author Thomas Carlyle was a student, and a Georgian building now referred to as "Bridge House". The Town Hall was built in Victorian style in 1878, using the regional sandstone. Annan also features a Historic Resources Centre. In Port Street, a few of the home windows remain obstructed up to avoid paying the home window tax obligation. Every year on the first Saturday in July, Annan commemorates the Royal Charter and also the boundaries of the Royal Burgh are confirmed when an installed cavalcade carries out the Riding of the Marches. Amusement consists of a procession, sports, field displays as well as massed pipeline bands.
