Extensions including garage conversions will usually require extra damp proofing to be added during the conversion, as the pre-existing garage typically has a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not built to be in accordance with building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing should be added to walls and floors. Furthermore, the roof of the garage conversion will need water proofing. The damp proofing of the floor of the garage conversion will often be performed by using a damp proof membrane. This membrane is available in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be placed down either on top of the existing concrete floor, below the new floor, or as part of both, depending on whether the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In a few garages, the walls will have already been damp proofed, but this might have to be improved as part of the conversion in order to meet current building regulations. The walls will need to be damp proofed in order to safeguard the brickwork from rotting gradually as moisture sets in. This is done by either employing damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls already present in the garage. Damp proofing is an important part of the building regulations that the garage conversion should adhere to, therefore is it important to ensure that your garage conversion employs appropriate damp proofing methods.
The average cost of Damp proofing is £1500. Costs vary based upon the materials and the organisation selected. The upper price range can be as high as £1725. The material costs are in general about £375

Llantwit Major is a small seaside town and community in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, resting on the Bristol Channel shore. It is one of 4 towns in the Vale of Glamorgan and the third greatest by population (13,366 (2001) after Barry and Penarth. The town's name in Welsh, Llanilltud Fawr, is derived from the name of Saint Illtud, who arrived at the region from Brittany, Gaul. He started the abbey of Illtud and the college attached to it, Cor Tewdws, which would come to be among the most well-regarded Christian colleges of the times. At peak it pulled in over 2000 students, including princes and several noteworthy clergymen, some now revered as saints. The modern town of Llantwit developed swiftly in the 20th century to accommodate Royal Air Force workers from the base constructed at nearby St Athan, however it holds on to its medieval cobbled streets and structures of the 15th and 16th centuries. Collugh Beach is a popular surfing destination and has the remnants of an Iron Age fort and some of the finest examples of Jurassic-period fossils in Wales. The pebble beach and its remarkable clifftops are part of a 14 miles (23 kilometre)-long shoreline safeguarded under the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, which stretches from Gileston in the east to Newton Point beyond Southerndown in the west. Llantwit Major is largely dependent on local retail and revenues from more afield. Most of the residents commute to work elsewhere, particularly Cardiff or Bridgend. During the course of the summer season tourism is crucial to the town which has "The Precinct", Rainbow Plaza and numerous bars and restaurants. Of note are the Old Swan Inn, Old White Hart Inn, The Tudor Tavern, and the 17th century West House Country Hotel Heritage Restaurant. For all your home developments, be sure to identify credible specialists in Llantwit Major to make certain of quality.

You should make sure that all signs of damp have gone before you redecorate your walls. If you want to paint your walls with a water-permeable emulsion paint, you can usually do this after 1 or 2 months. For other types of decoration you should wait longer.
Signs of rising damp tend to be close to the ground, usually no higher than a metre. It usually works its way up walls in horizontal lines. Penetrating damp usually develops in patches and can often be much higher up. For more advice, speak to a damp proofing professional.
There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.
