Guttering in Llantwit Major

Guttering is a vital element of the roofing of your home. It provides aesthetic advantages as well as making certain rainwater that runs off your roof is properly channeled from the edge of the building and into drains. The main element to selecting the best guttering for your home is being familiar with the needs of your existing roof. For instance, steeper or more substantial roofs will require guttering capable of channeling an increased flow of water. It may be tempting to simply exchange like for like, but a professional guttering company will be able to survey your house to understand your needs, and advise you on the most appropriate guttering for your roof. Guttering is available in a number of types and materials. For materials, PVC is typically the most popular. PVC guttering is very inexpensive while still being durable. It's available in a wide range of colours and styles. However, guttering is also manufactured from metal, generally either steel, aluminium or cast iron. While these materials are usually more expensive than PVC, they also last longer and are well suited to period properties as they may have a more traditionally designed aesthetic. Different moulds of guttering will also impact the flow of the water. Half round and square guttering are standard and suit many properties, while deep flow or ogee guttering are suitable for use on buildings that need increased water flow. Ogee guttering also has a unique mould which has an impressive appearance. Guttering is also available in a variety of shades, from traditional black or white to brown and grey. Furthermore, some PVC guttering can be found in a cast iron effect.

Llantwit Major

Llantwit Major is a modest coastal town and community in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, resting on the Bristol Channel shore. It is among four towns in the Vale of Glamorgan and the 3rd largest by population (13,366 (2001) after Barry and Penarth. The town's name in Welsh, Llanilltud Fawr, stemmed from the name of Saint Illtud, who came to the area from Brittany, Gaul. He started the abbey of Illtud and the college connected to it, Cor Tewdws, which would end up being among the most well-regarded Christian schools of the times. At peak it brought in over 2000 students, including princes and various distinguished clergymen, some now revered as saints. The modern town of Llantwit established rapidly in the 20th century to accommodate Royal Air Force workers from the base constructed at close-by St Athan, but it keeps its medieval cobbled streets and buildings of the 15th and 16th centuries. Collugh Beach is a popular surfing location and has the remnants of an Iron Age fort and a few of the finest examples of Jurassic-period fossils in Wales. The pebble beach and its dramatic clifftops are part of a 14 miles (23 kilometre)-long shoreline safeguarded under the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, which extends from Gileston in the east to Newton Point beyond Southerndown in the west. Llantwit Major is largely dependent on local retail and revenues from additional afield. Most of the occupants commute to work elsewhere, especially Cardiff or Bridgend. During the summer months tourism is important to the town which has "The Precinct", Rainbow Plaza and a number of clubs and restaurants. Of note are the Old Swan Inn, Old White Hart Inn, The Tudor Tavern, and the 17th century West House Country Hotel Heritage Restaurant. For all your home makeovers, make certain to identify trustworthy experts in Llantwit Major to make certain of quality.

    FAQs

What are gutters normally made from?

In the UK, gutters are normally made from uPVC. It’s a hardy plastic that won’t rot, warp or tarnish very easily, which is why it’s so popular. It’s the same material that’s used for most homes’ windows these days; they don’t have to be the standard white as they can be made into a range of colours. Expect to pay an average of £500 for the supply and installation of uPVC guttering, and more if you require scaffolding.

Other materials that are popular for gutters include copper, aluminium and cast iron. These are much more expensive – you might be looking at around £1500 or more for the supply and installation – but they give a more polished look and are often used on period properties or those in a conservation area. If you're considering these types of gutters, make sure you get a few quotes from different roofline companies so you can compare the different materials.

In the past, gutters were made from wood, asbestos concrete or stone. They were often lined with lead to stop the water from seeping through. When it was discovered that asbestos was seriously harmful, it of course stopped being used. Wood was prone to rotting, even with lead lining, and stone is heavy and expensive. So when uPVC came along, it became an affordable and easy material to use for gutters so homeowners could be confident that rainwater will be kept away from the foundations of their properties. It’s important to keep gutters clear from leaves and debris, because if they become blocked, they can make water to fall against your property’s walls, causing damp.

    How do you replace gutters?
The best way to replace gutters is to ask a reputable installer to do it for you. They have all the right safety equipment and knowledge to do it. But if you’re a competent DIYer, you could have a go at replacing the gutters yourself. If you do, you could save yourself an average of £359 on labour costs. The biggest risk from replacing guttering yourself is the height. Even if you’re on a secure ladder, if you’re not used to working at height you could seriously hurt yourself. If your home is a bungalow, the risk is lower, but anything two storeys and above carries significant risk. If you’re still happy to go ahead, there are a few things you’ll need to fit gutters yourself:
    • A sturdy ladder
    • Gloves and safety goggles
    • A hammer and nails to secure your fascia so it doesn’t fall down mid-replacement
    • A hacksaw – this will cut through uPVC guttering – just make sure you leave a margin of error with every cut you make
    • Cable ties or rope to secure the existing gutters while you dismantle them, so they don’t fall off
    • All the right fixings and brackets to secure the guttering
    • An electric drill and/or screwdrivers
Once you’ve removed the old guttering, you can get started with the new ones. Follow these steps:
    1. Add a gutter bracket to the top of the fascia board at the opposite end to the stop-end outlet, if you have one. Then tie a piece of string around the base of the bracket.
    2. You’ll need to place the gutter outlet accurately over the drain. Hold a plumb line against the fascia directly over the drain, and mark that position with a pencil. Following the manufacturer’s advice on the number of screws to use, fit the gutter outlet no more than 50mm below the level of the roof tiles.
    3. Stretch the piece of string you tied on the bracket along the fascia board, and tie it to the outlet. Make sure you check with a spirit level that the string slopes towards the outlet.
    4. Mark the positions of the other brackets. They should be no more than 800mm apart, or 600mm if your roof is very steep. They also shouldn’t be any more than 150mm from a joint or fitting. Then fit the rest of the brackets.
    5. Fit a stop-end to the first length of gutter and clip it into position on the brackets. At the other end, fit a union piece and screw it into the fascia.
    6. Then fit the next length of gutter into it, and the next until you’re finished. Cut the last one to fit using your hacksaw before attaching a stop-end. Then make sure all the joints line up with the insertion depth marks on the fittings. Then you’re done!
    What is a gutter?

A gutter is part of the system that takes rainwater away from a building. Every home will have some form of guttering system to stop water from dripping off the roof and into the walls. It’s important to keep your gutters clear because if water starts to seep into your home’s walls, you’re likely to get damp.

A guttering system consists of half pipes, troughs, bends and downpipes. They’re usually cylindrical in shape but they may be square on some homes and in countries outside of the UK. Technically, the gutter is the part that you’ll see across your roof that collects rainwater. The water will then feed into a downpipe from your roof’s edge to the base of your home, where you can collect it in something like a water butt, or it will be discharged to a surface water drain or soakaway.

In early times, gutters used to be made from lined wood or stone. Lead was often used as the liner to stop rainwater from seeping through the material, but you won’t see it used much anymore. These days, most homes have uPVC guttering as it’s a hardwearing plastic that should last a long time. But you’ll also see gutters made from aluminium, cast iron and copper, especially on period homes or those in a conservation area.

Every home needs a guttering system to ensure that rainwater doesn’t affect the foundations of the property. It’s also important to keep the gutters clear of debris like fallen leaves, as this will cause them to overflow, potentially causing water to soak into the walls and causing damp.

How to install guttering and downpipes?
If you’re a competent DIYer, it’s not too difficult to install guttering and downpipes if you’ve got uPVC ones. uPVC is a type of plastic and therefore is relatively light, but if you’ve got cast iron or copper guttering you might find it more difficult to replace and install. When you install new guttering and downpipes, you’ll need to remove your old ones. It’s a good idea to tie some rope or cable ties around the existing guttering while you dismantle them so they don’t fall down. We’ve explained how to replace guttering in a previous FAQ, so here we’ll focus on the downpipes. It’s simple if you have the right tools, including a sturdy ladder, a drill and screwdriver and all the fixings and brackets you’ll need.
    1. Hang a plumb bob from the outlet to the drain to use as a guide while you draw several marks on the wall with a pencil to show you where the downpipe will run.
    2. Join the marks up with a straight edge, creating a line to show where the centre of the downpipe will be.
    3. Position a downpipe clip at the top of wall, in the centre of the pencil line. Mark the position of its fixing holes on the wall. If you need an offset bend, put a downpipe clip directly below the bend.
    4. Repeat the process down the wall. Make sure there is no more than 1.8 metres between pipe clips.
    5. Refer to the guttering manufacturer’s instructions to see which drill bit is required. Use a drill to drill the fixing holes and insert wall plugs.
    6. Fit the first piece of downpipe starting from the outlet and moving towards the drain.
    7. If you need to add more downpipe, join the two pieces with a pipe socket and clip. Leave a 10mm gap between the end of the pipe and the bottom of the pipe socket, because it will probably expand. Then attach a pipe clip over the joint.
    8. Continue attaching pipe clips down the length of the downpipe.
    9. If you need to, fit a downpipe show to direct the water into the drain. Attach a downpipe clip directly below the socket of the shoe.
Although it seems easy, it’s always best to leave guttering works to the professionals. They’ve got experience with fitting neat and tidy guttering and downpipes, and they are used to working at height.
