Downham Market
Downham Market, in some cases merely described as Downham, is a market community and civil parish in Norfolk, England. It pushes the edge of the Fens, on the River Great Ouse, roughly 11 miles southern of King's Lynn, 39 miles west of Norwich and 30 miles north of Cambridge. The civil parish has an area of 5.2 kilometres ² and also in the 2011 census had a population of 9,994 in 4,637 households. For the purposes of city government, the parish falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. It becomes part of South West Norfolk parliamentary constituency. It was an agricultural centre, establishing as a market for the fruit and vegetables of the Fens with a bridge throughout the Ouse. Throughout the Middle Ages, it was renowned for its butter market and additionally hosted a remarkable equine fair. The market is now held Fridays as well as Saturdays on the city center parking area. Significant structures in the town include its mediaeval parish church, devoted to St Edmund, and also Victorian clock tower, built in 1878. The town is likewise called the place where Charles I hid after the Battle of Naseby.
