Extensions such as garage conversions will usually require supplementary damp proofing to be installed through the conversion, as the existing garage routinely has a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not designed to be in accordance with building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing should be added to walls and floors. Additionally, the roof of the garage conversion will require water proofing. The damp proofing of the floor of the garage conversion will often be performed by utilising a damp proof membrane. This membrane is available in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be placed down either on top of the existing concrete floor, underneath the new floor, or as part of both, depending on if the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In some garages, the walls have already been damp proofed, but this might need to be updated as part of the conversion to be able to meet current building regulations. The walls should be damp proofed to be able to safeguard the brickwork from rotting gradually as moisture sets in. This can be carried out by either using damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls that are already present in the garage. Damp proofing is an integral part of the building regulations that the garage conversion will need to comply with, and so is it important to ensure that your garage conversion employs suitable damp proofing methods.
The average cost of Damp proofing is £1500. Costs vary based upon the materials and the organisation selected. The upper price range can be as high as £1725. The material costs are in general about £375

Cumnock is a town in East Ayrshire, Scotland. The town sits at the convergence of the Glaisnock Water and the Lugar Water. There are 3 neighbouring property ventures which exist just outside the town borders, Craigens, Logan and Netherthird, with the former ironworks settlement of Lugar also just outside the town, contributing to a population of around 13000 in the immediate region. A brand-new housing project, Knockroon, was given planning permission on 9 December 2009 by East Ayrshire Council. This area of Ayrshire has seen human settlement for over 5000 years. It is believed that a site of worship has existed in Cumnock's Square for over 1100 years, though the earliest records start in about 1275. The patron saint of Cumnock is Saint Conval. James IV formed the Burgh of Cumnock. Cumnock housed lots of miners, plus functioned as the market town for the other, smaller sized towns in the district, like Auchinleck, Lugar, Muirkirk, Ochiltree and New Cumnock. The town has a strong socialist heritage due to its role as a mining centre. The father of the Labour Party, James Keir Hardie, lived in the town for a large part of his life, and a statue to him sits outside the town hall. A small property scheme in the town (Keir Hardie Hill) is named after him. The popular left-wing politician Emrys Hughes was regional MP for a time in the mid-20th century, and also resided in the town. William Wallace supposedly spent 3 months in the seat of Patrick Dunbar, according to the poem, 'The Wallace', by Blind Harry. Cumnock is also in the heart of Robert Burns country and the poet is thought to have probably hung around there. There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.
You should make sure that all signs of damp have gone before you redecorate your walls. If you want to paint your walls with a water-permeable emulsion paint, you can usually do this after 1 or 2 months. For other types of decoration you should wait longer.
Signs of rising damp tend to be close to the ground, usually no higher than a metre. It usually works its way up walls in horizontal lines. Penetrating damp usually develops in patches and can often be much higher up. For more advice, speak to a damp proofing professional.
Damp is a serious problem, particularly if you live in an old property, because it can lead to structural damage. This will cost you big money and could be very dangerous, to yourself and the property. Take damp seriously and get it inspected and resolved as soon as you discover it!
