Damp Proofing in Berwick-upon-tweed

Extensions such as garage conversions will typically require additional damp proofing to be added during the conversion, as the pre-existing garage will often have a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not manufactured to conform to building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing will have to be added to walls and floors. Furthermore, the roofing of the garage conversion will need water proofing. The damp proofing of the floor of the garage conversion will in most cases be performed by by using a damp proof membrane. This membrane will come in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be placed down either on top of the pre-existing concrete floor, below the new floor, or as part of both, depending on whether the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In some garages, the walls have already been damp proofed, but this might have to be improved as part of the conversion in order to comply with current building regulations. The walls should be damp proofed in order to protect the brickwork from rotting slowly as moisture sets in. This can be carried out by either applying damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls that are already in the garage. Damp proofing is an important part of the building regulations that the garage conversion should comply with, therefore is it necessary to make sure that your garage conversion incorporates suitable damp proofing methods.

Berwick-upon-tweed

Berwick-upon-Tweed is a town in the county of Northumberland. It's the northernmost town in England. It is located 2.5 miles (4 km) to the south of the Scottish border, at the mouth of the River Tweed, on the east coast . It's about 56 miles (90 km) to the south east of Edinburgh, 65 miles (105 km) north of Newcastle upon Tyne and 345 miles (555 km) north of London. The 2011 UK Census recorded Berwick's population as around 12,043. A civil parish and town council were established in 2008. The origins of Berwick are as an Anglo-Saxon settlement through the period of the Kingdom of Northumbria, which was annexed by England in the 10th century. The area was, for over 400 years, central to historical border wars amongst the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, and a number of instances possession of Berwick was swapped between the two kingdoms. The last time it changed hands was when England retook it in 1482. Berwick is still a traditional market town and also has some notable architectural features, for instance its medieval town walls, Elizabethan ramparts and Britain's earliest barracks buildings. Slightly more than 60% of the population works in the service sector, including shops, hotels and catering, financial services and most government activity, such as health care. About 13 per cent is in manufacturing, 10 per cent in agriculture, and 8 per cent in building. Some present and recent Berwick economic activities include salmon fishing, shipbuilding, engineering, sawmilling, fertilizer production, malting and the production of tweed and hosiery.
