Lairg
Lairg is a town as well as parish in Sutherland, Scotland. It has a population of 891 and also is at the south-eastern end of Loch Shin. Lairg is uncommon in the northern Highlands, if not distinct, in being a big settlement that is not on the coastline. One of the factors that Lairg is somewhat bigger than other non-coastal Highland towns is its main place within the region of Sutherland. Having 4 roadways which meet in the town, it used to be called "The Crossroads of the North". In the 19th century, it was offered with a train station, on what is now the Far North Line. This growth suggests that the north-west of Sutherland is currently less complicated to reach. (The Far North Line links Inverness in the south with Thurso and Wick in the north.).
