The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames towards the City of London. It was established in 1965 when three smaller council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This included the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, along with the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It is governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
It borders the City of London and also the London Borough of Tower Hamlets towards the north, with the River Thames forming the boundary, the London Borough of Lambeth to the west plus the London Borough of Lewisham towards the east. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Based on population estimates created during 2014, Southwark has a permanent population of about 302538 inhabitants.
The borough is residence to many cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich hosts the Dulwich Picture Gallery as well as the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
