The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was created in 1965 when three smaller council locations amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This included the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, along with the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It's controlled by Southwark London Borough Council.
The borough covers an overall area of around 11.14 square miles. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Based on population estimates made during 2014, Southwark includes a permanent population of about 302538 individuals.
The borough is home to a number of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery plus the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
