Average Basement renovation cost in Wandsworth

Basement conversions fluctuate in cost depending on project scale, professionals hired and location. If your basement conversion doesn’t need any construction work, then it should cost relatively little. However, the majority of projects at least need damp proofing and water proofing work, if not insulation, heating, electrical work and more. This means that even smaller basement conversion projects are still relatively expensive. The average UK cost ranges from £30,000 - £50,000.

Wandsworth

The London Borough of Wandsworth is a London borough in England, and forms a part of Inner London. The borough borders the London Borough of Lambeth to the east, the London Borough of Merton and also the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames towards the south, the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames to the west and towards the north, across the River Thames, 3 boroughs, namely the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea along with the City of Westminster.

It covers an overall area of about 13.23 square miles. In accordance with population estimates produced in the middle of 2014, the borough features a permanent population of around 312145 individuals. You will find numerous new or refurbished buildings along the borough's prosperous riverside such as the substantial Chelsea Bridge Wharf.

The Peace Pagoda, one of many such international Pagodas is in Battersea Park, a sprawling rectangle often hosting circuses next to the Thames. The London Heliport, London's most important and busiest heliport is just beyond Battersea Park and south of this is New Covent Garden Market. In Old Battersea two masonry mansions survived The Blitz, Old Battersea House and Downshire House, both of which hold the uncommon Grade II* status.

FAQs

Does a converted basement need windows?

Windows or lightwells can be a great way to introduce natural light into your basement, making it a more valuable, enjoyable space. However, they’re not always an essential requirement.

It’s important for your basement conversion to meet ventilation and fire safety building regulations. Windows can be a good way to do this, but they’re not the only option. Stack or mechanical ventilation, or ensuring that stairs up from your basement connect to an exit can be a good alternative.

So, while windows can be a great asset to your basement conversion, if you can’t afford them or they’re not structurally feasible, you can still create a basement conversion without them.

Is a basement conversion worth it?

Whether a basement is worth converting depends on your location and how much work it requires.

A basement conversion can be a great way to add space to your home, and can raise your property value. However, it can also be one of the most expensive ways to do this, so if there’s a possibility to extend your property, or convert a loft or garage, it’s worth considering this first.

You should also compare how much your basement conversion will cost with the amount it could raise your property value by. In some areas, a quality basement conversion could earn you money in the long run, but in others it’ll only cost you. If you’re planning on staying in your property for a long time this might not matter to you, but if it’s not your forever home then it’s an important thing to think about.

How to convert a basement into an apartment?

In some cases, it’s possible to convert a basement into an apartment. This can be a great way to incorporate an additional dwelling into your property and increase its value. However, converting a basement into an apartment can be quite expensive and time-consuming.

As with any type of dwelling, you’ll need to think about basic things like access, damp proofing, ventilation, insulation, heating, electrics, plumbing, lighting and décor. If you’re planning on extending your basement, then you’ll also need to ensure that your property is sufficiently supported.

It’s a good idea to consult a professional, like a basement conversion building specialist, to find out how feasible your project is before you go ahead with it.

Are pumps used for basement conversions noisy?

If your basement has a cavity drain membrane, it’ll need a pump to move water away from the exterior of your basement and prevent flooding.

Sump pumps can be noisy, but they don’t have to be. Generally, if you have a well-designed pump that’s installed correctly, you shouldn’t find it a problem. For best results, hire a skilled, experienced professional to supply and install your drainage system.
