Great Torrington (often abbreviated to Torrington, though the villages of Little Torrington and Black Torrington are positioned in the exact same region) is a little market community in the north of Devon, England. Parts of it are sited on high ground with steep fall to the River Torridge below, with the lower-lying parts of the community vulnerable to occasional flooding. Torrington is in the centre of Tarka Nation, a landscape captured by Henry Williamson in his novel Tarka the Otter in 1927. Great Torrington has among one of the most energetic offering neighborhoods in the UK. In July 2019, Great Torrington was reported to be the healthiest location to stay in Britain. Researchers from the College of Liverpool discovered that the location had reduced levels of pollution, great accessibility to green space and health services, together with few retail electrical outlets.
