Devizes
Devizes is a market community as well as civil parish in the centre of Wiltshire, England. It created around Devizes Castle, an 11th-century Norman castle, and got a charter in 1141 allowing regular markets, which are held weekly in a free market location. The castle was besieged during the Anarchy, a 12th-century civil war in between Stephen of England as well as Empress Matilda, and also again throughout the English Civil War when the Cavaliers (Royalists) raised the siege throughout the Battle of Roundway Down. Devizes stayed under Royalist control until 1645, when Oliver Cromwell struck as well as required the Royalists to give up. The castle was ruined in 1648 on the orders of Parliament, and also today little remains of it. From the 16th century Devizes came to be recognized for its textiles, and by the early 18th century it held the biggest corn market in the West Country, constructing the Corn Exchange in 1857. In the 18th century, brewing, curing of cigarette, and snuff-making were established. The Wadworth Brewery was founded in the town in 1875. Standing at the west side of the Vale of Pewsey, the community has to do with 10.5 miles (16.9 kilometres) southeast of Chippenham and 11 miles (18 km) east-north-east of the county town of Trowbridge. It has nearly five hundred provided buildings, some noteworthy churches, a town hall as well as a green in the centre of the community.
