Bingley
Bingley is a market town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford located in West Yorkshire, England. The town sits on the River Aire as well as the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is located in Airedale on the south of Ilkley Moor. In recent years, the population has dropped, having a population of about 20,000 in 2001 and decreasing to around 18,000 as recorded in the 2011 Census. The definition of the town's name is often thought to be 'Bing's Clearing' and is Saxon in origin. The town's initial settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was made in 1986 with the intention of replacing the ford. A great deal of the older history of the town remains present within the town, such as the Bingley Grammar School, established during the sixteenth century, which is thought to be one of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley features an abundance of local retailers, a street market, banks and the 'Little Theatre'. There are also effective transport links available, with a railway station located in the town centre and the Leeds Bradford Airport being in close proximity to the town. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal navigate the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with tourists often watching barges navigating the locks.
