Wellington

Wellington is a little industrial community in rural Somerset, England. It is located around 7 miles (11 kilometres) south west of Taunton in the Taunton Deane area, near the boundary with Devon, which leaves the Blackdown Hills to the south of the community. The community is approximated to have a population of 14,549. Called Weolingtun in the Anglo-Saxon period, its name had transformed to Walintone by the time of the Domesday Book of 1086. From 1215, the town was granted a charter, enabling its development as a centre for profession when traveling from Bristol to Exeter. Significant restoring took place following a fire in the town in 1731, after which it became a centre for cloth-making. Wellington was house of Fox, Fowler and Firm, which was the last industrial bank permitted to print their own sterling banknotes in England as well as Wales. As an outcome of the decline of typical sectors in England over the 20th century, the community started to lose its industrial economy. In particular to Wellington, closer links with Taunton suggested that much of the homeowners of Wellington travelled there for job, as well as the M5 motorway made it possible for car trips to be made more quickly. Neighborhood markets, which currently include an aerosol factory and bed suppliers, are commemorated at the Wellington Museum in Fore Street. Wellington is house to a number of social, sporting as well as religious sites, consisting of the 15th century Church of St. John the Baptist. Wellington provided its name to the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, who is celebrated by the close-by Wellington Monument. For all of your residence upgrades, see to it to take advantage of trustworthy professionals in Wellington to make sure of high quality.

FAQs

How much does one double glazed window cost?
How much one double glazed window costs is based on a few factors. If you just want to buy the window to install yourself, it will cost less than if you want an installer to fit it for you. If you want to simply buy one double glazed window without installation it could cost anywhere between £100-£300. That’s for a simple casement window, but other types like sash or tilt and turn windows could cost more. It’s recommended that you get a reputable installer to fit your double glazed windows because they’ve had the relevant training and will be able to install it much more quickly. How much it will cost for them to install one double glazed window will very based on your location, the type of window, how difficult the window is to access and whether you choose standard white uPVC or a coloured or woodgrain effect. An average uPVC casement window might cost somewhere between £300-£400, while a dual turn window might cost between £550-£660 to install. Do you really need to replace the entire window? If it’s just the double glazing that needs replacing, for example if it’s misted up inside, this will cost much less. Most window installers or a glazier will be able to just replace the sealed unit inside, and that may cost as little as £250. It’s always best to get a range of quotes from reputable companies so you know you’ve got a great price and you’re sure you’ll get excellent service.

Can you replace just one double glazed window?

Yes, of course! It’s common for people to replace just one double glazed window. One reason that people want to replace one window is that the sealed unit inside has failed. You’ll know if this has happened because you’ll be able to see condensation on the inside of glass, which gets frustrating because you can’t wipe it away. In this case, you can choose to simply replace the sealed unit or the entire frame, which you might want to do if it’s looking past its best.

When you’re replacing just one double glazed window, if you know the brand of your current windows you could ask your installer if they can source the same ones. This will help to keep them looking as similar as possible, although if your existing windows are very old you may notice some discolouration on the exterior compared to the new one, and locks and trickle vents might look different.

Replacing just one double glazed window shouldn’t take a qualified window fitter long, and could cost as little as £400. If you want to simply replace the sealed unit, that may only cost around £250. You could try to fit a new window yourself, but it’s worth bearing in mind that all replacement windows need to be certified that they’ve been installed to meet building regulations, so you’ll need to apply to your local building control officer who will come and inspect the work then issue a certificate. If you ask an installer who is registered with a self-certification scheme (like FENSA) to fit the window for you, they can issue the certificate themselves when they’ve finished the work.

Can I fix glass on one side of a double glazed window?

Unfortunately, you can’t fix the glass on one side of a double glazed window. That’s because they’re sealed units – once one pane of glass is broken, that will break the seal and its thermal insulation properties will be lost.

The good news is that if your window frame is still looking great, there’s no need to replace that. You can simply replace the glass in the window, which will cost much less. You can look to spend around £250 on a sealed unit, whereas a whole replacement single window may cost up to £600.

When an installer comes to replace the glass in your double glazed window, they will survey the inside and outside of your home around the window, then move any furniture by the window so they’ve got access. They should then pop a dust sheet down to stop any debris from getting on your floor.

Then, the installer will carefully remove the beads from the frame. They will then lift the glass out of the frame and put it somewhere safe before cleaning out all of the dust and any debris that has found its way into the frame. Using spacers at the bottom of the frame, the installer will make sure that the sealed unit is square in the frame to get a good fit. Once they’re happy, they will replace the beading and make sure it looks perfect before cleaning up their tools.

You could have a go at replacing the glass on a double glazed window yourself, but it’s not recommended. Leave it to the professionals who will know exactly what to do and will be able to do it quickly and safely.

How long does it take to install one small double glazed window?

To install one small double glazed window, it will take anywhere between two hours and half a day. It will depend on whether one installer is fitting your window or two. And if you’re doing it yourself and don’t have any professional experience, it will take even longer.

When the window fitters arrive, they will make sure they’ve got safe access to the window and move any heavy furniture if they need to. Any good installer will lay down a dust sheet, but it’s a good idea to check that they’ve got one laid down before they start.

The first step any window installer will take is to double check the measurements of the new frame against your existing one. Hopefully it should match up, so then they’ll take the old window out. Then, they’ll insert the new frame into the aperture and bolt it into the concrete. They'll check it with a spirit level to ensure it’s even before moving onto the glass sealed unit.

The installer will place the glass into the aperture, then fit the beads to secure the glass in the frame. They’ll then use silicone and trim on the inside and outside to ensure the window looks perfect. You won’t be able to see where they’ve used sealants or trims because they’ll colour match them so it’s not noticeable. Then, they’ll tidy up all of their tools and the working area and let you know what needs to be done in terms of proving that the window meets building regulations. Most good installers are registered with a self-certification scheme, so will be able to issue a certification once the work is complete.
