Isle Of Benbecula
Benbecula is an island of the Outer Hebrides, in the Atlantic Sea off the west coast of Scotland. In the 2011 census it had a normally resident population of 1,283, with a substantial percentage of Roman Catholics. It develops part of the area provided by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar or the Western Isles Council. The island is about 12 kilometres from west to eastern and also a comparable range from north to south. It lies in between the islands of North Uist and also South Uist; it is connected to both by road causeways. Travel to any of the other Hebridean islands, or to the British mainland, is by air or sea. Benbecula Airport on the island has everyday trips to Glasgow, Stornoway as well as Barra. A direct solution to Inverness was introduced in 2006 but stopped in May 2007. There are no direct ferryboat services from Benbecula to the landmass, however a solution operated by Caledonian MacBrayne from Lochboisdale on South Uist gives a five-hour crossing to Oban on the landmass, whilst an additional service from Lochmaddy on North Uist provides a two-hour crossing to Uig on the Inner Hebridean island of Skye, and also therefore to the mainland through the Skye Bridge. Ferry services from the islands of Berneray (connected by embankment to North Uist) as well as Eriskay (connected to South Uist) connect to the other Outer Hebridean islands of Harris and also Barra specifically. There is a thick cluster of lochs across nearly the entire island, and mostly all of the island is listed below 20 metres in elevation.
