Isle Of Benbecula
Benbecula is an island of the Outer Hebrides, in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coastline of Scotland. In the 2011 census it had an usually resident population of 1,283, with a sizable percentage of Roman Catholics. It develops part of the location carried out by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar or the Western Isles Council. The island is about 12 kilometres from west to eastern and also a similar range from north to south. It lies between the islands of North Uist as well as South Uist; it is linked to both by roadway causeways. Travel to any of the various other Hebridean islands, or to the British mainland, is by air or sea. Benbecula Airport on the island has everyday flights to Glasgow, Stornoway and also Barra. A direct service to Inverness was presented in 2006 yet ceased in May 2007. There are no direct ferryboat services from Benbecula to the mainland, however a solution operated by Caledonian MacBrayne from Lochboisdale on South Uist offers a five-hour going across to Oban on the landmass, whilst another solution from Lochmaddy on North Uist provides a two-hour crossing to Uig on the Inner Hebridean island of Skye, and also for this reason to the mainland through the Skye Bridge. Ferry services from the islands of Berneray (linked by embankment to North Uist) and Eriskay (linked to South Uist) connect to the other Outer Hebridean islands of Harris and Barra respectively. There is a dense cluster of lochs throughout virtually the whole island, and mostly all of the island is below 20 metres in altitude.
