Boldon Colliery
The Boldons are a team of 3 tiny villages in the north east of England - East Boldon, West Boldon and Boldon Colliery - north of Sunderland, east of Newcastle and south of South Shields and Jarrow. They have a population of 13,271. Existing within the historical limits of County Durham, the towns are first recorded in print in 1170. Their names advanced from the words "Bold" or "Botl", implying a building, and also "dun", indicating a hill. In 1866, job began sinking a pit that started creating coal in 1869, and was then called Boldon New Winning. The town that created close by in the 1870s came to be called Boldon Colliery. When the mine was grown and also extended in the 1910s, additional housing to fit the workforce was built to the south of the pit in an area known as Boldon New Town. Up until 1974 the area was provided as a city area of County Durham, yet since then has become part of the district of South Tyneside. In 1976, the Boldon Colliery Band showed up in episode 13 of the tv series When the Boat Comes In. The mine enclosed 1982 yet more work appeared when an Asda supermarket opened up in 1987. Current developments include Boldon Business Park. Boldon Colliery also has its own multi-screen cinema operated by Cineworld. The primary secondary school in the area is Boldon School, an expert sporting activities college.
