It is the primary settlement in the Teesdale location, as well as is a prominent vacationer location. The Bowes Museum has the most effective collection of European penalty and decorative arts in the North of England, housed in a wonderful 19th-century French-style estate. Its most popular exhibition is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton, though art includes work by Goya as well as El Greco. Barnard Castle remains on the north bank of the River Tees, contrary Startforth and 21 miles (34 km) south-west of the county town of Durham. Close-by communities consist of Bishop Auckland to the north-east, Darlington to the eastern as well as Richmond in North Yorkshire to the south-east. Barnard Castle's largest single company is GlaxoSmithKline which has a production facility on the outskirts of community. Barnard Castle is for all purposes (historical, ceremonial and also administrative) situated in Region Durham. The county boundary with the North Riding of Yorkshire was readjusted in 1967: that part of the town of Barnard Castle historically in Yorkshire was contributed to County Durham. Barnard Castle was the administrative centre of the former Teesdale district of County Durham till its abolition on 1 April 2009. The community is currently administered by Durham County Council Unitary Authority, as primary authority and by Barnard Castle Town Council, as a parish. The Town Council elects a ritualistic Town Mayor yearly. It belongs to the Bishop Auckland parliamentary constituency, which as of 2017 is stood for in parliament by Helen Goodman of Labour, though with a small majority over the Conservatives. It is in the North East England region, which functions as a constituency for the European Parliament. In between 1894 and 1967 the community was administratively part of Barnard Castle Urban Area.
