Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, Area Durham, England. It is called after the castle around which it was constructed. It is the main settlement in the Teesdale location, and is a prominent tourist destination. The Bowes Museum has the very best collection of European penalty and also ornamental arts in the North of England, housed in a splendid 19th-century French-style chateau. Its most famous display is the 18th-century Silver Swan robot, though art consists of work by Goya and El Greco. Barnard Castle remains on the north financial institution of the River Tees, contrary Startforth and also 21 miles (34 km) south-west of the county town of Durham. Nearby towns include Bishop Auckland to the north-east, Darlington to the eastern and Richmond in North Yorkshire to the south-east. Barnard Castle's largest solitary employer is GlaxoSmithKline which has a production center on the borders of community. Barnard Castle is for all functions (historic, ritualistic and also management) situated in Area Durham. The county border with the North Riding of Yorkshire was readjusted in 1967: that part of the town of Barnard Castle traditionally in Yorkshire was added to County Durham. Barnard Castle was the administrative centre of the former Teesdale district of County Durham until its abolition on 1 April 2009. The town is now administered by Durham County Council Unitary Authority, as principal authority and also by Barnard Castle Town Council, as a parish. The Community Council elects a ceremonial Town Mayor each year. It is part of the Bishop Auckland parliamentary constituency, which as of 2017 is represented in parliament by Helen Goodman of Labour, though with a little majority over the Conservatives. It remains in the North East England area, which serves as a constituency for the European Parliament. Between 1894 and 1967 the town was administratively part of Barnard Castle Urban Area.
