Appleby-in-westmorland
Appleby-in-Westmorland is a market community as well as civil parish in the Eden district, in the administrative county of Cumbria, in North West England. The parish had a population of 3,048 in 2011. It hinges on a loophole of the River Eden in the historical county of Westmorland, of which it was the county town. Its name was merely Appleby up until the city government changes of 1974. When a follower parish was created from the previous district, the council transformed its name to tape that of the historical area. Appleby is 13.7 mi (22 kilometres) south eastern of Penrith, 32.2 mi (52 km) southern east of Carlisle, 27.2 mi (44 kilometres) north east of Kendal, 45.2 mi (73 km) west of Darlington, and 61.2 mi (98 kilometres) west of Middlesbrough. Appleby is overlooked by the privately possessed Appleby Castle, a mainly Norman structure that worked as house for Woman Anne Clifford in the 17th century. Appleby's main sector is tourism, due to its background, remote location, landscapes as well as distance to the Lake District, the North Pennines, Swaledale and Howgill Fells. From 1973, Appleby Castle was the head office of Ferguson Industrial Holdings Plc.
