Canonbie
Canonbie (population 390) is a little town in Dumfriesshire within the local authority area of Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, 6 miles southern of Langholm and also two miles north of the Anglo-Scottish border. It gets on the A7 road from Carlisle to Edinburgh, and the River Esk streams through it. There are constant references in older records to it as Canobie. Canonbie was immortalised in a rhyme by Sir Walter Scott entitled Marmion. A popular section covers the exploits of young Lochinvar. Having actually stolen the hand of the new bride of Netherby Hall, about three miles southern of Canonbie, the rushing knight is chased via Canonbie, but makes great his escape.
