Bargoed
Bargoed is a town within the Rhymney Valley, one of the South Wales Valleys. It's positioned along the Rhymney River inside the county borough of Caerphilly, and it lies on the ancient boundary of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, with Bargoed traditionally lying within the old county of Glamorganshire whereas Aberbargoed was inside the old county of Monmouthshire. It's unsurprising, consequently, that the English meaning of the town's name is 'border'. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11900. Traditionally a market town, Bargoed developed into a prominent town following the opening of a colliery in 1903. By 1921, Bargoed had a resident population of around 17,901; it's been steadily declining since then, because the overall demand for Welsh coal diminished. The colliery, which was the object of a painting by L. S. Lowry, shut down during the 1980s, and its site has been turned into a country park. The town has in recent years been undergoing a major redevelopment program, which incorporated a bypass running through the valley with links to the town centre.
