Pitched roofs have always been commonly seen around the country, but now it seems the flat roof is growing in popularity. There are some significant reasons for this as well, along with the fact they're less costly to have constructed and are better for energy efficiency, costing you less on energy bills.

What's more, the flat roofing is ideal for being resistant to the flippant weather conditions the UK is well known for. The style of roofing can also be combined with almost just about any material as well, depending on your needs and existing property.

If a flat roof sounds like something you might benefit from, why don't you assess prices using our quick and simple online service. We'll match your information with respected roof firms within Harwich who can visit your property and offer a totally free quote for the work.

The work itself can take several weeks to finish, all depending on the size of your home. Of course, if it's a restoration job this may take considerably less time.

Harwich

Harwich is a town in the English county of Essex. Located on the coast in the Tendring district, it is near Felixstowe, Ipswich, Colchester and Clacton on Sea, and it is the most northern coastal town within Essex. Because of its position on the estuaries of the River Stour and River Orwell, as well as its benefit to seafarers as being the only safe anchorage between the Thames and the Humber, the town had significant civil and military maritime importance for a long period of time. In 1657, the town became a marine base and was highly fortified with the building and construction of the Harwich Redoubt, Beacon Hill Battery, and Bath Side Battery. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town has a population of around 17684. Even though it is a town of a reasonably modest size, Harwich has a high track record for its architectural heritage. The town continues to be structured making use of the conventional street plan containing principal thoroughfares connected by a number of small alleys, which shows the town's medieval origins. Most of the existing medieval structures are private homes, although there is a variety of public structures of a historical nature. This features the parish church of St. Nicholas, constructed in 1821 in a Gothic style, which consists of numerous of the authentic home furnishings and an organ. Only one building is Grade I listed, which is the Guildhall of 1769. A striking building is the Pier Hotel of 1860, renamed the Great Eastern Hotel of 1864, which is a vivid demonstration of the town's changing role after the arrival of the railway line in Colchester, attracting increasing quantities of visitors. For all your home upgrades, make certain to make use of credible contractors in Harwich to make certain of quality.

    FAQs

how to replace flat roof felt?

How To Replace Flat Roof Felt

Also referred to as tar paper, roofing felt is installed underneath the roof’s shingles to help deny water access to your home. Installing the roofing felt in overlapping layers builds a water barrier in situations whereby the weather damages or blows away the shingles. Although the application of a roofing felt on a flat roof is relatively easier and safer than working on a peaked roof, it’s advisable to take enough care and precautions. If you lack proper training and experience for this task, we’d recommend you employ a reliable professional to guarantee the best results and save you from further headaches especially in cases whereby unfortunate errors are made. This step by step guide will give you a good insight into the flat roof felt replacement process.

    • Take a measurement of the width and length of the roof.

    • Calculate the square footage by multiplying the numbers.

    • Multiply the square footage gotten by three (it’s advisable to install three layers of roofing felt to create a really strong weather barrier).

    • Use a claw hammer to remove the existing roofing felt.

    • Use utility knife to cut the new felt to fit the length of the roof.

    • Place the first piece along the roof’s edge and use a hammer tacker to tack the felt in place with staples or galvanized nails and hammer.

    • Put the staples or nails at every 6 inches along the side touching the roof’s edge as well as down the short sides.

    • Repeat the same process for the second piece, laying it out beside the first row of felt.

    • Cut a piece of felt to the appropriate length using a utility knife to begin the second layer of roofing felt, and cutting it in half, lengthwise.

    • Apply construction adhesive along the first row using a trowel.

    • Press the first piece for the second layer onto the adhesive. Repeat this process until the roof is covered with a second layer

    • Apply construction adhesive over the second layer to install the third layer. Begin with a full piece of felt without cutting it in half.

    • Overlap each piece by 2 inches until you’ve completely installed the third layer.

    What is overlaying?

If your existing roof is still in good condition but the membrane is getting old, it’s often not worth exposing the structure to the weather whilst the contractor strips off the old membranes. The contractor will leave them in place to act as a base layer for a new roofing system. As long as there are no other problems with your roof, then overlaying is a good way to replace your flat roof.If you have any more questions about flat roofing that aren’t listed here, fill out our form to ask a contractor.

How can I maintain my flat roof?

You should inspect your roof twice a year, ideally after rain or snow, to see if it’s draining properly. Also in the Spring to check for damage that may of been caused over the winter months that will need to be put right before the next winter. Have an inspection carried out if you are unsure.

How long should a flat roof last?

It depends on the material you use, but if your flat roof is installed correctly it should last for at least 10 years, and at least 20 if a material other than felt is used. Always question a roofing company when they quote to find out what materials they use and what guarantee's they offer.
