Catterick Garrison
Catterick Garrison is a significant garrison and town positioned 3 miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies inside the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided among the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided in between two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a small stream called Leadmill Gill, is in the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Each parish has its personal parish council. It is the biggest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of about 13000 and measuring over 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to be a short-term camp to accommodate two full divisions with around 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is expected to grow to more than 25000 by 2020, making it the largest population centre inside the local area. Lacking a true town centre, the Garrison gained its first significant supermarket in 2000, as well as a retail park referred to as 'Richmondshire Walk', which also contains a McDonalds, a Poundstretcher and a Peacocks, amongst others. 'Catterick Leisure Centre' is a purpose built centre opposite the retail park, opened in July 2009, and it offers a broad spectrum of leisure and fitness facilities which include a swimming pool, as well as a gym, and also an adjoining public library.
