Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, Region Durham, England. It is named after the castle around which it was constructed. It is the primary negotiation in the Teesdale location, and is a preferred tourist destination. The Bowes Museum has the best collection of European fine and decorative arts in the North of England, housed in a magnificent 19th-century French-style chateau. Its most renowned exhibit is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton, though art consists of job by Goya as well as El Greco. Barnard Castle sits on the north financial institution of the River Tees, contrary Startforth and 21 miles (34 km) south-west of the county town of Durham. Barnard Castle was the management centre of the former Teesdale district of County Durham till its abolition on 1 April 2009. The community is currently provided by Durham County Council Unitary Authority, as major authority as well as by Barnard Castle Town Council, as a church. The Town Council chooses a ceremonial Town Mayor yearly. It becomes part of the Bishop Auckland parliamentary constituency, which since 2017 is represented in parliament by Helen Goodman of Labour, though with a little majority over the Conservatives.
